Regular dental cleanings brush oral problems away

Regular Dental Cleanings

Looking great is never complete without a beautiful smile. If you want to keep a smile with beautiful pearly white teeth, it is important to make periodic dental appointments.

What are regular dental cleanings?

It is important to understand what a regular dental cleaning isThis is a procedure necessary to maintain healthy gums. To be more specific, it involves cleaning the shallow spaces between the teeth and the gums to minimize the build-up of plaque and tartar. Plaque is a sticky bacterial deposit that can ultimately lead to tooth decay. Tartar, on the other hand, is a hard, calcified deposit on the teeth and is another cause for tooth decay. Regular dental cleanings by a dentist combined with daily brushing and flossing the gums leads to clean and healthy gums.

Why are regular dental cleanings necessary?

Flossing and careful brushing can be done at home on a regular basis. This is not enough to prevent tartar that may still develop even among people who are very good about following regular oral hygieneDespite the best efforts that a person may take, regular dental cleaning by a dentist is necessary to ensure that tartar is removed. This is done with the help of specialized tools and is called scaling. This is followed by polishing to remove surface stains from the teeth and finally flossing to make sure that the areas between the teeth are completely clean.

Frequency of dental visits

The number of dental visits for a regular dental cleaning varies from person to person. There is no evidence to prove that frequent dental cleaning results in a more perfect oral health. It can be safely said that a visit to the dentist once every 6 months is effective. If not 6 months, at least one visit in a year is highly recommended. This is to make sure you are cleaning your teeth cleaning correctly and to prevent periodontal diseases that may have progressed since the previous visit.

What should you do between visits?

This is an important question and if you follow some simple rules, you may minimize dental visits.

  • Brushing your teeth thoroughly, at least twice a day. Choose a good toothbrush that reaches every corner of your teeth and change your toothbrush every 3 months. Remember to use a good toothpaste as well.
  • Flossing should be done at least once a day. It helps remove food and plaque in areas where your toothbrush can’t reach.
  • Use a mouth wash/rinse after brushing to prevent plaque and tartar. This will also make your breath fresh.
  • Eat healthy food, don’t smoke, limit alcohol use and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What if a regular dental schedule is not followed?

Vigorous and incorrect brushing may harm the gums, making them sore. It could also damage tooth enamel and cause gum bleeding. While it is essential to maintain good oral health, care must be taken to ensure that a regular dental cleaning is followed up with correct oral practice as instructed by the dentist.

Benefits of regular dental cleanings:

Prevent cavities and tooth loss:  To reiterate, regular dental cleanings can minimize the build-up of plaque and tartar which in the long run could rub the tooth enamel ultimately causing tooth decay. Plaque, if left unattended could also result in tooth loss in adults.

Prevent stains: Drinking tea/coffee/alcohol, use of tobacco can leave stains on the teeth. A regular dental cleaning can remove the stains and add sparkle to your teeth. You can now flash that smile of yours without being embarrassed about the stains.

Good teeth=Good health: Good oral health has a link with overall health. A visit to the dentist for regular dental cleaning can help the dentist detect health problems such as heart diseases and even stroke at a much early stage and help prevent them.

Prevents major tooth ailments: Good oral health and regular dental cleanings also helps prevent bigger oral health problems.
